In Miss Milligan's class,
every student was not so much a name as a number. Every time the
class handed in papers after a test or whatever, each student
would call out his/her assigned number and place a paper on the
teacher's desk. This litany (which was endlessly repeated
throughout the year) was more or less in alphabetical order. I
remember some of the list, but there are gaps. What I think
