It was a
discussion Mr. Kushner launched about stereotyping. I remember
his saying he was from Newark and that not all blacks were
perfectly shaped athletes, for example. Since the only time we
saw blacks was at CHS basketball games, this would have been a
reasonable assumption on our parts. Au contraire, Mr. Kushner
said, there were plenty of pear-shaped blacks, many of them
interested solely in intellectual pursuits, caring nothing about
athletics. Pear-shaped black guys from Newark. That always
stuck with me.
Actually, I
appreciated his saying it; because it really did make me think
about the unwisdom of stereotyping generally. |
